Description
Viña Esmeralda is a delicate, aromatic white from the Penedès in Catalonia, made by Torres. Miguel Torres created it after his oenology studies to offer a fruitier, more perfumed style than the market then held, choosing Muscat, here Moscatel de Alejandría, as the most aromatic and delicate grape available. The fruit is grown in the higher, mountainous parts of the Upper Penedès, where cooler air and altitude slow ripening and preserve both the acidity and the floral aromatic compounds that define Muscat. The wine is made young and fresh, fermented cool in steel to protect those aromatics and left with a touch of sweetness that sits within its fresh frame rather than reading as sweet. At 11.5 percent it is light and easy. It is organic and vegan. The colour is pale and bright, the nose full of exotic fruit and grape with lemon blossom, white flowers, apricot and a hint of rose and elderflower. The palate is soft and gently off dry, the fruit balanced by fresh acidity, finishing clean. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or alongside lightly spiced food.
