Description
Torremilanos sits in Aranda de Duero in the Ribera del Duero, where the Penalba Lopez family has farmed since the 1970s and works its 200 hectare estate to biodynamic principles. This rosado is built mainly on Tempranillo with Viura and other red and white varieties, grown on the limestone and clay soils of the high Duero plateau. Altitude here brings a wide diurnal swing, with warm days and cold nights that hold acidity and keep the fruit fresh as it ripens. The wine is fermented and then aged in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the texture, settles the colour and lends a vanilla and light toast character that sits over the fruit. Lees contact during ageing adds further roundness and a savoury depth unusual in a rose. The colour is a deep onion skin pink. The nose runs to red berries, cherry and red currant with a citrus peel lift and a vanilla note from the wood. The palate is dry and rounded, with ripe berry fruit, a touch of white peach and a long, gently savoury finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
