Torremilanos makes Montecastrillo as an organic Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero, from young vines at altitude. Just four months in French oak keep it fresh and juicy, with ripe red fruit, a touch of vanilla and lively acidity.
Description
Torremilanos Montecastrillo is the organic red of the Peñalba López family, who have farmed their Ribera del Duero estate since 1975 using respectful, certified organic methods. It is made from Tempranillo, known locally as Tinta del País, drawn from the estate's own vines aged between 15 and 25 years and planted at altitude on the Castilian plateau. The continental climate brings cold nights that hold acidity and colour in the fruit, giving the wine its fresh, juicy character. Ageing is brief, four months in French oak barrels, just enough to round the edges and add a light vanilla and spice frame while leaving the primary fruit in the foreground. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose is full of ripe red and black fruit, raspberry and cherry, with a floral hint and a touch of pepper. The palate is medium bodied, juicy and fresh, with soft tannin and a clean finish that makes it easy to drink young. At 12.5 percent it is on the lighter side for the region. Serve lightly cool, around 15 to 16 degrees, with roast chicken, grilled pork or tomato based dishes.
