Torre de Oña makes this single-varietal Tempranillo from vineyards around its estate in Páganos, Rioja Alavesa. Hand-harvested into small crates and aged 16 months in French and American oak, it shows ripe red fruit, sweet spice and a fresh, savoury finish.
Description
Torre de Oña produces Finca San Martín from Tempranillo grown around its estate in Páganos, in Rioja Alavesa within Álava. Rioja Alavesa sits on calcareous clay soils at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, which hold water and reflect light, helping Tempranillo ripen fully while keeping acidity. The harvest is done by hand into small crates so the bunches arrive intact, protecting the fruit from oxidation before fermentation. The wine ages 16 months in French and American oak in the Crianza style, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves rounds the tannins and adds vanilla, clove and toast over the bright Tempranillo fruit. The estate works to respectful, sustainable agriculture. It shows a bright cherry red. The nose leads with ripe red cherry, raspberry and plum, lifted by sweet oak spice and a hint of leather. The palate is medium to full bodied, with supple tannins, fresh acidity and a clean, savoury finish that reflects the Alavesa stamp. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It pairs well with grilled and roast lamb, the regional classic.
