Description
Torre de Golbán Reserva is a red from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, made by Dominio de Atauta from Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo. The fruit comes from the Valle de Atauta near the river Duero in Soria, from vineyards of around one hundred years planted at nine hundred metres. This is one of the highest and coolest corners of Ribera, where a continental climate with a slight Mediterranean influence brings hot days and very cold nights. That extreme diurnal range, combined with century old ungrafted vines on sandy soils, gives small berries with thick skins, deep colour and firm tannin while keeping acidity intact. As a Reserva the wine sees extended ageing, with twelve months in French oak softening the tannins through slow oxidation and adding vanilla and sweet spice, then further time resting before release. It is deep cherry red with garnet at the rim, showing dark plum and cherry over liquorice, oak spice, tobacco and a leathery, mature edge. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe tannins, bright acidity and a long finish. Serve at seventeen to eighteen degrees and decant ahead. It suits roast beef, lamb and game.
