Tornatore make this Etna Rosso from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Aged twelve months in large oak casks, it is fresh and mineral, with red cherry, herbs and a smoky, ashy edge.
Description
Tornatore farm on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, where Francesco Tornatore built the estate in 2010 on a winemaking tradition that predates the Greeks. Etna Rosso blends Nerello Mascalese with a little Nerello Cappuccio, grown at altitude on dark volcanic soils of weathered lava and ash. The poor, mineral rich volcanic ground and the wide swing between warm days and cold mountain nights give these wines high acidity, fine tannin and a savoury, smoky character often compared to Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. The wine is aged twelve months in large oak casks and a further three months in bottle. Large neutral casks allow a slow, gentle oxygen exchange that softens the tannins without adding noticeable wood flavour, keeping the focus on fruit and terroir. Expect a translucent red, a nose of red cherry, raspberry and red currant with dried herbs, smoke and a stony, ashy minerality, and a palate that is fresh, light to medium bodied and mineral, with bright acidity and a savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It is a graceful match for game, poultry and earthy dishes.
