Description
This official Tormore single malt, aged 15 year old from 2009, drawn from cask 44041 and bottled at 56%. The outturn was 214 bottles. Built in the late 1950s in the Spey valley near Grantown, Tormore is a grand Speyside distillery. It was granted listed building status in 1986, rare for a distillery so young.
The spirit was made in copper stills whose purifiers keep the spirit light, for a light, nutty make of real clarity. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the fruit. Past a decade the nut deepens into almond, honey and a riper orchard fruit. A slightly oily texture carries the cask flavour over the clean spirit. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand. Most of the spirit matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon wood. The distillery sits near Grantown-on-Spey, in sight of the Cromdale Hills.
At a natural 56% it is full and nutty. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel, with almond, apple and a clean citrus. The mouthfeel is light, the fruit carried on a nutty body. The finish runs light, citrussy and fresh. This is a Speysider from the white cathedral of the Spey.
