Tormore 9 Years Old 2011 Càrn Mòr Strictly Limited (Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers)

Bottled by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, this Tormore, a 9 year old release from 2011 and bottled at 47.5%. A release of 1308 bottles. Set in the Spey valley near Grantown, Tormore has distilled since 1960. It was granted listed building status in 1986, rare for a distillery so young.

The spirit was made in copper stills whose purifiers keep the spirit light, for a light, nutty make of real clarity. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the nut and fruit lead. At this age the spirit is fresh and nutty, the apple and citrus bright. Sherry wood suits the light make, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. The distillery sits near Grantown-on-Spey, in sight of the Cromdale Hills. Tormore is cleaner than the waxy Clynelish, with more weight than the lightest Speysiders. The new owners released a Blueprint Series of 10 year olds in 2025 ahead of a full range.

At its natural 47.5% it is concentrated. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel, with pear, almond and a citrus lift. The texture is light and slightly oily, the nut threaded through. A gently drying, nutty finish lingers. This is the malt of Speyside's white cathedral.
