Description
A Tormore single malt, selected and bottled by Cadenhead's, a 30 year old Speyside malt from 1988 and bottled at 43.2%. The outturn was 132 bottles. Tormore, built in 1958 by Long John Distillers near Grantown-on-Spey in Speyside, is one of Scotland's most striking distilleries. Elixir Distillers bought it in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand.
It was worked through swan neck stills with purifiers, for the light, clean, nutty make Tormore is known for. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the fruit. Decades leave it deep and oily, nut and dried fruit with great age. Most Tormore matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon. The distillery doubled from four stills to eight in 1972, then settled back to four pairs. It has used wood chips from local forestry to fire its stills since 1984. For most of its life its spirit vanished quietly into blends rather than into bottles of its own.
At cask strength 43.2% it is muscular yet clean. Apple, citrus and a soft almond meet a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. Soft orchard fruit and nut sit behind the sweetness. A nutty, gently spiced finish lingers. This is a clean, citrussy Speyside single malt.
