Description
Berry Bros & Rudd bottled this Tormore single malt, a 27 year old Speyside malt from 1992, drawn from cask 101153 and bottled at 43.7%. Tormore, opened in 1960 beneath the Cromdale Hills in Speyside, is one of Scotland's most striking distilleries. Long a filler for the Long John and Ballantine's blends, Tormore was rarely seen as a single malt.
The spirit was run through purifier stills for a light, clean spirit, to build a clean, citrussy, almond edged character. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the nut and fruit lead. At this age it is rounded and nutty, the fruit folded into a honeyed, waxy body. The purifiers raise reflux, giving the clean, nutty spirit Tormore is known for. A workers' village was built nearby in the same striking style. Heat recovery condensers and sub coolers run alongside the purifier stills. The soft water runs through heather and peat and granite before reaching the distillery.
Undiluted at 43.7%, it is layered. Melon, nut and a grassy note sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. It is clean and structured, the nutty spirit shining through. A nutty, gently spiced finish lingers. This is Tormore's clean, nutty Speyside style.
