Description
Murray McDavid bottled this Tormore single malt, a 26 year old from 1995, drawn from cask 1820318 + 1820304 and bottled at 44.1%. 637 bottles in all. Tormore was completed in 1960 near Grantown-on-Spey in Speyside, and its single malt is being revived under new ownership. Purifiers on the spirit stills keep the spirit light and clean.
It was worked through swan neck stills with purifiers, for the light, clean, nutty make Tormore is known for. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Long ageing brings a deeper nutty, dried fruit character and a mellow oak. Refill oak lets the clean, nutty distillery character lead. Its rise in 1958 broke a long pause in distillery building that had lasted decades. The architect Sir Albert Richardson gave it a grand, ornamental design unlike any other distillery. Its granite buildings, copper roofs and musical clock earned it listed status in 1986.
Undiluted at 44.1%, it is layered. The Pedro Ximenez lends raisin, date and treacle, and melon, nut and a grassy note sit alongside a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. It is clean and structured, the nutty spirit shining through. It closes clean, nutty and dry. This is Tormore's clean, nutty Speyside style.
