Description
Single malt Tormore, an independent Signatory Vintage bottling matured to 21 year old from 1995, drawn from cask 3900 + 3909 and bottled at 43%. Tormore was founded in 1958 on the A95 in the heart of Speyside; it is a listed building, the white cathedral of Speyside. The distillery is sometimes called the white cathedral of Speyside for its grand design.
Distilled in swan neck stills fitted with purifiers, on soft Achvochkie Burn water, giving the structured, nutty Speyside spirit. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the clean character to the fore. Long ageing brings a deeper nutty, dried fruit character and a mellow oak. Sherry wood suits the light make, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. For most of its life its spirit vanished quietly into blends rather than into bottles of its own. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand.
At an easy 43% it is gentle. The refill oak lending honey and vanilla runs under green apple, nut and a soft spice. It is fine and nutty, the fruit and oak well matched. Almond and a dry oak see out the finish. This is a light, almond edged Speyside single malt.
