Description
This is a Tormore single malt, chosen and bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd matured to 20 year old from 1992, drawn from cask 100154 and bottled at 55.7%. Tormore was built in the late 1950s a mile south of the River Spey; it is one of the most striking distilleries in Scotland. Elixir Distillers bought it in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand.
It was drawn off the distillery's swan neck stills with their purifiers, for a delicate, ester rich spirit. A sherry cask wrapped the light spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Around the mid teens the malt gains a fuller nutty depth over the citrus. The cool Speyside climate gives a slow, even maturation over the years. The distillery doubled from four stills to eight in 1972, then settled back to four pairs. It has used wood chips from local forestry to fire its stills since 1984.
At cask strength 55.7% it is muscular yet clean. Sherried dried fruit and a nutty edge come through, and a gentle vanilla from the wood runs under a clean, nutty character. A dried fruit and a dry oak spice give it depth. Almond and a dry oak see out the finish. This is a structured, nutty Speysider.
