Description
From Claxton's comes this Tormore, a 14 year old Speyside malt from 2010, drawn from cask EXP1080 and bottled at 50%. Tormore, completed in 1960 in Speyside, near the Cairngorms, is one of Scotland's most striking distilleries. The distillery is sometimes called the white cathedral of Speyside for its grand design.
Distilled on soft Speyside water through purifier stills, building the firm, clean Tormore style. A wine cask held it, layering fruit over the nutty malt. Past a decade the nut deepens into almond, honey and a riper orchard fruit. The light, ester rich make takes cask character well across maturation. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand. Most of the spirit matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon wood. The distillery sits near Grantown-on-Spey, in sight of the Cromdale Hills.
At a full 50% it is intense yet nutty. The Port cask adds plum and red berry, and a nutty, orchard fruit sweetness sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. A green apple and a citrus note lift it. A nutty, gently spiced finish lingers. This is the architectural jewel of Speyside in a glass.
