Description
Torelló is a Catalan family winery in the Alt Penedès, the higher, cooler zone of the appellation south of Barcelona. Xarel·lo is the region's signature white grape, valued for its structure, its natural acidity and its capacity to age. What sets this wine apart is the cellar work. The grapes are vinified and matured across five different vessels: amphorae, glass demijohns, cement eggs, stainless steel tanks and barrels of both oak and acacia. Each vessel shapes the wine differently, the porous amphorae and eggs allowing slow micro-oxygenation and building texture, the barrels adding a subtle nutty, spiced frame, and the steel keeping a core of fresh fruit. The altitude of the vineyards preserves acidity and gives the wine its lift and ageing potential. The result is a layered white showing pear, white peach and almond over beeswax, fresh dough and a light honeyed depth, with a broad but fresh palate and a long, textured finish. Serve at 11 to 13 degrees in a large glass.
