Description
Torabhaig, the newest distillery on the Isle of Skye, opened in 2017 as the island's second after Talisker. Its Legacy Series charts the distillery's early years towards a ten year old single malt, and Allt Gleann is its second chapter, named for one of the burns feeding the distillery. This is the Batch Strength edition, the same whisky as the standard Allt Gleann but bottled undiluted. Allt Gleann was the release that won Torabhaig its early following, and this is its boldest form.
Distilled from heavily peated barley in the distillery's copper stills and matured chiefly in first fill Bourbon, it is bottled at its natural batch strength of 61.1 percent, without chill filtration or added colour. At full strength the well tempered peat shows in all its depth. The distillery's barley is malted by Crisp at Port Gordon, the peating done over Aberdeenshire peat that lends a woody, cigar ash edge to the smoke.
On the palate it is bold and coastal, a salty maritime smoke over lemon, vanilla and a struck flint minerality, with white chocolate and a warming pepper into a long, smoky finish. A drop of water opens the fruit further. The fullest, most powerful face of Torabhaig's Allt Gleann.
