Description
Torabhaig opened in 2017 as the second distillery on the Isle of Skye, built by Mossburn Distillers in a restored farmstead at Teangue on the Sleat peninsula. This is a single cask from the 2018 vintage, bottled for The Whisky Exchange, and at seven years old it is among the more mature Torabhaig releases to appear so far.
Distilled in 2018 from heavily peated barley and matured in a single Bourbon cask, number 2829, the spirit was bottled at its natural strength of 58.7 percent, without chill filtration or added colour. A few extra years let the well tempered peat settle and the fruit develop. Bottled at natural strength without chill filtration or colour, in keeping with the distillery's open approach to what goes into each bottle.
On the palate a coastal peat smoke meets lemon, vanilla and white chocolate, with a struck flint minerality and a fresh sea breeze, the smoke softening with age. A long, gently smoky finish. A more mature single cask from Skye's young second distillery, a glimpse of where Torabhaig is heading. As the distillery's stock ages, casks like this hint at the depth a ten year old Torabhaig may bring. The smoke carries that woody, struck flint note the distillery's barley is known for, set against a clean coastal freshness.
