Description
Torabhaig is the newest distillery on the Isle of Skye, opened in 2017 by Mossburn Distillers as the island's second after Talisker. This independent single cask was distilled in 2018 and bottled by Dràm Mòr, a Scottish family run independent that selects casks and bottles them at natural strength.
Matured seven years in Bourbon cask 1160 from heavily peated spirit, it was bottled at its natural 56.7 percent, without chill filtration or added colour. Torabhaig tempers its smoke so it complements rather than overwhelms the coastal fruit. The distillery's barley is malted by Crisp at Port Gordon, the peating done over Aberdeenshire peat that lends a woody, cigar ash edge to the smoke.
On the palate a coastal peat smoke meets lemon, vanilla and a flinty minerality, with a fresh sea breeze and a long, smoky finish. A sibling cask to Dràm Mòr's other 2018 Torabhaig, an independent single cask from Skye's second distillery. A second Dràm Mòr cask of the same vintage, each bottled at natural strength without colour or filtration. The smoke carries that woody, struck flint note the distillery's barley is known for, set against a clean coastal freshness.
