Description
This official Tomatin single malt, a 41 year old release from 1978, drawn from cask 49541 + 49542 and bottled at 47%. Just 350 bottles were filled. Founded in 1897 high in the Monadhliath hills, Tomatin makes a soft, fruity Highland single malt. The distillery was founded in 1897 by a local company, taking its name from the village, Gaelic for hill of the juniper.
The spirit was run through the distillery's onion stills after a long fermentation, to build a fruity, gently spiced character. A sherry cask wrapped the soft spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At this great age the malt is full and mellow, the fruit deep and the oak soft. The soft, fruity spirit takes cask character readily across maturation. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades. The Antiquary blend came into the group through the blender J and W Hardie.
Undiluted at 47%, it is layered. Orchard fruit and a gentle malt, and sherried dried fruit and a nutty edge come through. A baked apple and a gentle spice lift it. It finishes soft, fruity and clean. This is the softer side of the Highlands.
