Description
An official Cu Bocan single malt, bottled at 46%. Cù Bòcan is the peated single malt of Tomatin distillery, made in the Highland hills south of Inverness. The distillery was founded in 1897 by a local company, taking its name from the village, Gaelic for hill of the juniper.
The spirit was made in copper stills from peated barley, for a smoky, fruity make. A sherry butt held it, sherry and smoke twining together. No age is given, but the soft smoke marks it as Cu Bocan. Cu Bocan is known for unusual casks, the wood shaping the smoke. Cu Bocan focuses on unusual cask finishes, from sherry to wine and beyond. Tomatin stands at over three hundred metres, among the highest in the land. An old cattle drovers' road ran through Tomatin, and whisky was made here long before the distillery. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible.
At 46% it is gentle, fruity and mellow. Soft peat over apple and vanilla, and the Oloroso adds figgy fruit and a warm nuttiness. It is smoky and soft, the peat and fruit well matched. The finish is gentle, smoky and fruity. This is a peated Highland single malt from near Inverness.
