Description
Hart Brothers bottled this Tomatin matured to 20 year old from 2004 and bottled at 50.1%. Founded in 1897 high in the Monadhliath hills, Tomatin makes a soft, fruity Highland single malt. It was bought in 1986 by Takara Shuzo of Japan, the first Scotch distillery in Japanese hands.
Drawn off copper pot stills fed by the burn of the deer, for a soft, apple and pear scented spirit. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and full while staying soft. The mellow make leans on the cask for much of its colour and flavour. Tomatin stands at over three hundred metres, among the highest in the land. An old cattle drovers' road ran through Tomatin, and whisky was made here long before the distillery. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades.
At a full 50.1% it is bold yet fruity. A soft, fruity sweetness, and the Marsala lends raisin and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is soft, the fruit carried on a mellow body. A long, honeyed finish carries a fruity lift. This is a gentle, fruity Highland single malt.
