Description
The Vintage Malt Whisky Co Ltd bottled this Tomatin, an 11 year old Highland malt from 2013, drawn from cask 5190 and bottled at 50%. 342 bottles in all. Founded in 1897 high in the Monadhliath hills, Tomatin makes a soft, fruity Highland single malt. The core is unpeated, with peated spirit made one week a year and bottled as Cu Bocan.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt in copper stills on Allt na Frithe water, giving the light, mellow spirit at its heart. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Still young, the malt is fruity and mellow with a gentle spice. A patient maturation suits the soft, fruity Tomatin character. The arrival of the Highland Railway in the 1890s made the distillery possible. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades. The Antiquary blend came into the group through the blender J and W Hardie.
At a hearty 50% it carries real weight. Apple, pear and a soft honey, and sherried dried fruit and a nutty edge come through. It is fruity and soft, the fruit and oak well matched. The finish is rounded, honeyed and gentle. This is a gentle, fruity Highland single malt.
