Description
Single malt Tobermory, an independent Jack Wiebers Whisky World bottling, a 9 year old from 2013, drawn from cask 2481 and bottled at 54%. Just 91 bottles were filled. Tobermory, the unpeated malt of the Isle of Mull, comes from one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Ledaig, the old name kept for the peated malt, means safe haven in Gaelic.
It was worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. It was matured in ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. Younger here, it keeps a fruity, oily freshness with a herbal lift. Coastal warehousing lends a mineral edge to the fruity malt. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019.
Bottled at a cask strength 54%, it is intense. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. Soft orchard fruit and wax sit behind the cask. It finishes fruity, oily and warming. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
