This is a Tobermory, from the independent bottler The Caskhound, a 30 year old release from 1995, drawn from cask 1301 and bottled at 46.6%. 199 bottles in all. Tobermory is the fruity, unpeated side of the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. Ledaig, the old name kept for the peated malt, means safe haven in Gaelic.

It was worked through the boil ball stills for an oily, fruity make, for the waxy, fruity spirit Tobermory is known for. It was matured in ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. At this great age the malt is full and waxy, the fruit deep and the oak polished. Coastal warehousing lends a mineral edge to the fruity malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798.

At a hearty 46.6% it carries real weight. A fruity, waxy sweetness, and ex-Bourbon oak gives vanilla and a light sweetness. A baked apple and a nutty note lift it. Wax and ripe fruit see out a long finish. This is a waxy, fruity island single malt.
