Description
Bottled by Keeble Cask Company Ltd, this Tobermory, a 28 year old release from 1995, drawn from cask 1662 and bottled at 46.1%. 196 bottles in all. Tobermory is the unpeated malt of the island's only distillery, founded in 1798 by John Sinclair. Its history is famously broken, with long silences; the buildings once held holiday lets and stored cheese.
Run through the distillery's boil ball stills, to build a nutty, waxy, fruity character. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the waxy fruit lead. Very old Tobermory turns profound, waxy and tropical yet still fruity. The waxy, oily spirit takes on cask character slowly and holds its texture well. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years.
Undiluted at 46.1%, it is powerful. A waxy, oily fruitiness, and ex-Bourbon oak gives vanilla and a light sweetness. Beneath it run orchard fruit, wax and a soft nut. It closes long, waxy and fruity. This is the waxy, fruity malt of Mull.
