From Jack Wiebers Whisky World comes this Tobermory, a 22 year old release from 1995, drawn from cask 713 and bottled at 44.3%. 249 bottles in all. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. Water comes from the Gearr Abhainn, a private hill loch above the town of Tobermory.

The spirit was made in the high reflux stills from unpeated barley, for a fruity, waxy make with a green lift. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak for a honeyed sweetness. Past twenty years the spirit turns honeyed and waxy while keeping its fruit. A waxy texture carries the cask flavour across long years. The stills carry boil bulbs and a kink in the lyne arms, which lifts the reflux. Water is drawn from a private hill loch, the Gearr Abhainn, above the town. Its painted home town gives the unpeated malt its name. A rare, more heavily peated make has appeared under the name Iona, after a neighbouring isle.

At an easy 44.3% it is gentle. Pear, oily malt and a green note, and vanilla and a soft oak come from the bourbon wood. A green note and a gentle spice give it depth. A long, waxy finish carries a green lift. This is the fruity side of the Isle of Mull's distillery.
