Description
From The Single Cask Ltd comes this Tobermory, a 22 year old from 1994, drawn from cask A394 and bottled at 59.1%. 86 bottles in all. Tobermory is the unpeated single malt of Mull's only distillery, founded in 1798 in the island's painted harbour town. The distillery makes two malts: the unpeated Tobermory and the peated Ledaig.
It was drawn off stills with their S shaped lyne arms, for a medium bodied, fruity spirit. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, vanilla under the orchard fruit. At this age it is rich and oily, the fruit folded into a waxy, honeyed body. Sea air works into the island maturation, lending a faint saline lift. The distillery's history is broken by long silences; its buildings once stored a local cheddar. Burn Stewart revived production in 1993, and Distell bought the distillery in 2013. The stills carry boil bulbs and a kink in the lyne arms, which lifts the reflux.
Bottled at a cask strength 59.1%, it is intense. Green apple, citrus and a herbal lift, and the ex-Bourbon lends vanilla and a soft honey. It is fruity and full, the oily spirit shining through. It finishes fruity, oily and warming. This is Tobermory's oily, unpeated island single malt.
