Description
This is a Tobermory, released by Claxton's, a 13 year old from 2010, drawn from cask C24119 and bottled at 50.5%. Only 284 bottles were released. Tobermory is the unpeated malt of the island's only distillery, founded in 1798 by John Sinclair. The stills carry boil bulbs and an S shaped kink in the lyne arms, which raises reflux.
Run through the distillery's boil ball stills, to build a nutty, waxy, fruity character. A fortified cask lent red fruit and a soft spice. Mid age brings a deeper honey and a riper, waxy fruit. The unpeated make leans on the cask, the wood adding much of the colour and flavour. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years.
At a full 50.5% it is intense and layered. A waxy, oily fruitiness, and the Rum cask brings brown sugar and a tropical lift. Beneath it run orchard fruit, wax and a soft nut. The finish runs fruity, nutty and warm. This is the waxy, fruity malt of Mull.
