Description
Castes Blancas comes from O Morto Wines, the Galician venture of Matias Michelini, an Argentine winemaker who built his reputation in the Uco Valley before crossing the Atlantic to work in Ribeiro. The estate farms four hectares of small plots of old vines around the town of Ribadavia, worked biodynamically and made as a natural wine, certified organic and vegan. This is a traditional Ribeiro field blend of Albarino, Godello, Loureiro and Treixadura, the local varieties planted and picked together. Ribeiro sits inland from the coast where the river valleys funnel a cooling Atlantic influence, and the granite and sandy soils drain freely, giving high acidity and a clear mineral streak. The wine is aged on its lees, which lends texture and a subtle savoury depth to a low intervention style. The colour is pale, sometimes lightly hazy in keeping with the natural approach, and the nose shows lemon, white peach, white flowers and a herbal, thyme note. The palate is fresh and taut, with citrus, green apple and a saline finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
