Barbadillo revives Tintilla de Rota, a near forgotten Cádiz red grape, with this unoaked Nude. Grown on white albariza soils and made without ageing, it is fresh and fruity, with ripe red berries, plum and a warm, peppery edge from its 15.5 per cent strength.
Description
Tintilla Nude is a red wine from Bodegas Barbadillo in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, made from Tintilla de Rota, a local Cádiz variety the winery has helped bring back from near disappearance. The grapes come from Barbadillo's own vineyards on albariza, the white, chalk rich soil of the Marco de Jerez that reflects sunlight and retains moisture deep in the subsoil through the hot Andalusian summer. The fruit ripens fully in this warm coastal climate, which explains the wine's depth and 15.5 per cent alcohol. Production deliberately avoids any ageing in wood, so the wine keeps the pure aromas of the variety itself rather than borrowing character from a barrel. Made in a young, fresh and fruity style, it shows the grape unfiltered by oak. The colour is bright, deep cherry. The nose is open and direct, with ripe red berries, cherry and plum over a peppery, lightly herbal note. The palate is warm and full, fruit driven, with soft tannins and a savoury finish that carries the warmth of its strength. Serve slightly cool, at 15 to 16 degrees, to keep the fruit fresh. It suits grilled red meats, lamb skewers and rich mushroom dishes.
