Close Planted is Timo Mayer’s most sought-after Pinot Noir, from densely planted vines on volcanic soils in the Yarra Valley. Whole-bunch fermented and raised in foudre, it is delicate and fragrant, with ripe cherry, red berries and a savoury, spicy edge.
Description
Timo Mayer settled in the Yarra Valley with his wife Rhonda Ferguson some twenty years ago and has built a reputation for wild, expressive Pinot Noir. Close Planted is his most coveted bottling, named for the high vine density that has each plant competing for water and nutrients, lowering yields and concentrating the fruit. The vines grow on deep red volcanic soils at altitude, where cool nights and a wide diurnal range slow ripening and lock in acidity and aroma. The wine is organically farmed and fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches, the included stems lending a savoury, peppery, herbal lift and fine, fresh tannins. Eleven months in foudre, the large old oak cask, gives gentle oxygen exchange that softens the texture without adding wood flavour. The result is fragrant and detailed, pale to medium ruby, with ripe cherry, red berries and crushed flowers over subtle spice and a stony, earthy depth. The palate is delicate and precise, the tannins silky, the acidity bright, the finish long and savoury. Serve lightly chilled at around 14 degrees in a Burgundy glass with duck, chicken or mushroom dishes.
