Celler Tianna Negre makes this Binissalem red on Mallorca from Callet and Manto Negro with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Ten months in French oak frame ripe red berry and plum, Mediterranean herbs and a peppery, savoury finish.
Description
Tianna Negre is made by Celler Tianna Negre in Binissalem, on Mallorca, the family project that grew from a 2007 garage vintage into a modern, fruit-focused winery. This red leads with the island's two flagship native grapes, Callet and Manto Negro, both soft and aromatic, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for colour and structure. The vineyards sit on limestone and clay soils in a warm Mediterranean climate, where the sea air and cool nights of the Tramuntana foothills hold acidity and aromatic detail despite the heat, the wine reaching a ripe 14.5 per cent. Because the local grapes are light in tannin, the international varieties supply the frame while Callet and Manto Negro bring perfume and the scent of wild herbs. Ageing is ten months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a light spice without dominating. The colour is medium to deep ruby. The nose shows ripe red berries, cherry and plum over dried herbs, pepper and liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied and savoury, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and an earthy, herb-edged finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits roast and grilled meats.
