A nine year old single cask of Hampden from Thompson Bros., a classic Trelawny pot still with tropical fruit, vanilla and ester over overripe pineapple and oak, the funk prominent but not overpowering, bottled unsweetened at cask strength, 55.8%.
Description
Thompson Bros. bottled this Hampden as a single cask selected for a Hiroshima bar, drawing on the Trelawny distillery that is the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk. Hampden runs 100% pot still with marques from light OWH up to the famous DOK, and at nine years this expression shows the house character with its esters present but balanced.
The nose presents beautifully, classic Hampden with esters prominent but not completely overpowering, tropical fruit, vanilla and a woody depth. The palate carries that ester through overripe pineapple and oak, the funk allowing the layered character to come through. Bottled at cask strength, 55.8%, and without added sugar, it is Hampden in a poised, expressive mood, intense enough to satisfy the funk-seeker yet controlled enough to reveal its detail. A fine single cask for drinkers who want the Trelawny signature with room to breathe.
