Thierry Mortet’s Chambolle-Musigny is a biodynamic village Burgundy from a single plot of 45 year old Pinot Noir on clay and limestone. An elegant red of red cherry, rose and a fine, earthy structure.
Description
Thierry Mortet Chambolle-Musigny is a single-variety Pinot Noir from the A.O.C. Chambolle-Musigny on Burgundy's Côte d'Or, made by Domaine Thierry Mortet and farmed biodynamically. The fruit comes from one plot of vines around 45 years old planted on fine clay and limestone, the classic soils of the Côte. Limestone drains freely and brings the lift, perfume and red-fruit precision that mark Chambolle, while the clay adds a measure of flesh and structure. Burgundy's cool continental climate ripens Pinot Noir slowly, holding acidity and keeping the wine light on its feet. The harvest is manual, with sorting in the vineyard and on a table in the winery, and the bunches are fully destemmed before fermentation. Ageing in oak barrel, with restrained use of new wood, rounds the tannins through slow oxygen exchange while leaving the fruit and floral character clear. The wine is bright, medium ruby, the nose offering red cherry, raspberry, rose and an earthy, savoury edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and elegant, with fine tannins and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees in a large glass. It suits roast poultry, duck and mushrooms.
