A cask strength Hampden bottled by The Whisky Jury, softer and grungier than the house norm, with fruity sweetness, light wood and a faint smoky edge over candied fruit, distilled on the pot still and bottled unsweetened at 59.2%.
Description
This 8 Year Old single cask comes from Hampden, the Trelawny estate built on double-retort pot stills and famed for high-ester funk, selected by Belgian bottler The Whisky Jury. Where Hampden often arrives loud, this pick lands quieter and a touch rougher around the edges, a slightly dirty take rather than a full ester hammer, distilled from molasses in 2016 and bottled at cask strength.
The nose is fruity and faintly smoky with a sweet edge, the palate woody and fermented with candied fruit and an unexpected salty note, and the finish runs warm and woody with a flash of pineapple and chocolate. Aged in ex-bourbon, unsweetened and bottled at 59.2%, it works best neat with a drop of water or pushed into a bold cocktail, an interesting curiosity for Hampden followers more than a showcase of the distillery's power.
