Description
This Springbank was from the independent bottler Glenscoma, a 29 year old from 1990, drawn from cask 204 and bottled at 47.5%. 239 bottles in all. In Mitchell family hands since 1828, Springbank is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Concerto barley is malted on the floors and kilned in the distillery's own kiln.
The spirit was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the oily fruit. Beyond twenty years the malt grows waxy and deep, tropical fruit and salt over an oily base. The oily, robust make carries cask flavour while holding its own character. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
Bottled at a cask strength 47.5%, it is rich. Creamy vanilla and oak sweetness meets an oily, maritime character with light peat. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. Salt and oily fruit see out a long finish. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
