A continental aged 23 year Uitvlugt at 58.4 percent, this dry single estate Demerara offers caramel, vanilla and pastry sweetness with coconut and dried fruit over elegant wood and light leather, approachable despite its strength.
Description
The Nectar bottled this 23 year Uitvlugt under its Daily Drams line, drawn from a Guyanese estate whose Savalle column marque, here the ICBU code, gives a refined, fruity and lightly spiced Demerara that is among the cleaner faces of the category. Unsweetened and matured in cooler Europe, it carries the gentler oak profile of continental rather than tropical ageing.
The molasses spirit shows vanilla, wood, sweet and caramel notes on the nose, then a pastry like palate of vanilla, caramel and coconut over wood and leather, closing peppery and woody with dried fruit and spice. The continental maturation keeps it elegant and easy drinking even at 58.4 percent, the wood polished rather than aggressive and the sweetness coming from the cask, not dosage. This is an approachable, dessert leaning pour for drinkers who enjoy refined Demerara or smoother aged rum and want a higher proof single estate cask that stays friendly.
