A more gourmand 1998 Caroni single cask at twenty-three years and 59%, leaning into tobacco, leather, espresso and toasted oak over a softer thread of tar, floral and pastry on the nose, easier to sip than the dirtiest heavy marks.
Description
Bottled by The Nectar for its Of The Daily Drams line, this is a single cask of Caroni, the closed Trinidad distillery whose finite stocks have become the most mythologised in rum. From the 1998 vintage and held twenty-three years, it arrives at a full 59% and shows the more refined, gourmand side of the distillery rather than its grimiest face.
The molasses spirit carries woody, tobacco and tar notes on the nose with a floral, pastry lift; the palate turns to tobacco, leather, wood and tar, and the finish brings espresso, leather and tobacco over toasted oak. The tarry industrial signature is present but restrained, making this a slightly lighter, more drinkable Caroni for its strength. A well-liked expression for drinkers who want the distillery's character without the heaviest petrol and rubber.
