Description
Mars Komagatake is the flagship single malt of Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano, owned by Hombo Shuzo and operating at Japan's highest altitude whisky site since its 2011 restart. This 2024 global release, bottled at 50%, draws on a combination of bourbon, sherry and wine casks, a broader cask mix than the distillery's vintage single cask releases.
The three cask types give the NAS blend a layered profile: bourbon casks provide vanilla and sweetness, sherry casks add depth and dried fruit, and wine casks introduce a softer, red fruit dimension. The interaction of these influences with the distillery's clean, mountain-influenced distillate produces an annual Komagatake release that reflects the full scope of the Mars Shinshu maturation programme at 50% bottling strength.
