Description
Mars Komagatake, the single malt of Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, sits at one of Japan's highest distilling altitudes, where cool mountain air brings a slow, clean maturation. This NAS expression was bottled in 2016 at cask strength for the Japanese market, matured in Ex-Bourbon casks and showing a character that spans both sweetness and a more savoury dimension.
The flavour profile runs from citric brightness and vanilla through honey and a light sherried depth, with an unusual savoury, almost kippered note that reflects an older distilling era before Mars Shinshu's 2011 restart fully refined the house character. Honey and vanilla anchor the palate, while the cask strength bottling at 52% gives concentration and weight without masking the distillery's inherently clean new-make foundation.
