Mars Komagatake is the single malt brand of Mars Shinshu distillery, operated by Hombo Shuzo in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, deep in the Central Alps at one of Japan's highest distilling elevations. This NAS release was bottled in 2020 at cask strength for the European market, drawing spirit matured in Ex-Bourbon casks before a finishing period in IPA beer casks, an unconventional touch that reflects the distillery's experimental outlook.
The IPA finish lends fresh hop bitterness and a bright citrus lift over the clean, mountain-air sweetness typical of Komagatake, with Ex-Bourbon vanilla and cereal rounding out the base. The cool, thin-aired climate of the Nagano Alps slows maturation and preserves the distillery's naturally clean new-make character, letting the cask and finish take centre stage at full strength.
