Released in 2024 for global markets, this NAS Mars Komagatake from Hombo Shuzo's Mars Shinshu distillery in Miyada, Nagano prefecture, continues the distillery's IPA cask finish programme. The spirit begins in Ex-Bourbon casks, building the clean vanilla and orchard fruit typical of this high-altitude Nagano distillery, before transfer to India Pale Ale beer casks for the finishing period.
The IPA finish brings a fresh hop character and citrus bitterness that sits over the sweeter Ex-Bourbon base, giving the whisky an unusual dual personality. Bottled at cask strength, the release delivers both concentration and the kind of bright, aromatic character that Komagatake has become known for since Mars Shinshu resumed production in 2011. The cool Central Alps climate keeps the spirit clean throughout maturation, letting the cask contributions register clearly.
