The Mars 8 Years Old bottled in 2020 for the European market is a cask strength blend from Mars Shinshu, Hombo Shuzo's high-altitude distillery in Miyada, Nagano. As a blended whisky rather than a single malt, it combines malt spirit with grain and may include sourced components, though the eight-year age statement and 48% cask strength bottling signal an intention to showcase matured complexity rather than blend for softness alone.

Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 48%, the 2020 release shows a distinctly dry and savoury side: husky grain, hay, leafy and leathery notes alongside new wood and a light smokiness. It is a more austere expression than much of the Mars Shinshu single malt range, its earthy character a reminder that the high-altitude, cool-climate environment can produce angular as well as delicate spirits.
