The Mars 2014 Yakushima Aging is a three year old single malt from Mars Shinshu, the Hombo Shuzo distillery in Miyada, Nagano, with a distinctive post-distillation journey: after initial filling, the spirit was transferred to age at the company's warehouse on Yakushima, the island off Kagoshima in southern Kyushu. The warm, humid subtropical climate of Yakushima accelerates maturation significantly compared with the cool Central Alps environment of the home distillery.
Bottled at 59% cask strength from Ex-Bourbon casks and released for the European market in 2017, the whisky shows fresh fruit as its defining characteristic, a profile consistent with the faster, tropical-influenced extraction that Yakushima's climate provides. The compressed maturation gives a three year old spirit more apparent sweetness and ripeness than one aged at altitude in Nagano, making this an interesting side-by-side reference against the standard Miyada-aged expressions of the same vintage.
