Description
The Mars 2013 Tsunuki Aging is a three year old single malt from Mars Shinshu in Miyada, Nagano, with a notable production wrinkle: the spirit was aged partly at Hombo Shuzo's Tsunuki warehouse in Kagoshima, the company's southern Kyushu facility where warmer, more humid conditions accelerate maturation relative to the cool Central Alps environment. The contrast between the two locations gives this bottling a layered story.
Bottled at 59% cask strength from Ex-Bourbon casks and released globally in 2016, the whisky shows fresh fruit and a hay-like, clean quality on the nose, reflecting the lighter mountain character of the Nagano distillate. The Tsunuki aging element adds a slightly richer, warmer undercurrent typical of the faster southern maturation, giving the bottling more texture than a straight Miyada-only three year old might deliver at the same age.
