Description
The Mars 2011 European market bottling is a three year old single malt from Mars Shinshu in Miyada, Nagano, distilled in the year the Central Alps distillery restarted under Hombo Shuzo and bottled in 2014. Its maturation across both Oloroso sherry and American White Oak casks marks it apart from the standard bourbon-only 2011 release, the sherry component adding colour and sweet dried fruit to the young spirit.
Bottled at 57% cask strength, the combination of Oloroso and American White Oak draws out a sherried character on what would otherwise be a clean, new-wood-forward young malt. Three years is a short time, and the whisky is upfront about it: the wood and cask influence dominate, but the marriage of sherry sweetness and clean Nagano distillate makes it an interesting early document from the revived Mars Shinshu site.
