The Macallan Edition No. 1, released in 2015, marked the beginning of the Edition Series, focusing on showcasing the influence of oak on whisky. This expression was crafted using a combination of eight distinct cask types, each contributing unique flavors. The casks included 1st Fill European Tevasa Butts for green timber and clean oak notes, 1st Fill European Hudosa Butts for soft oak tones, and 1st Fill American Vasyma Puncheons, which added beeswax and new furniture polish characteristics. Other casks, such as the 1st Fill European Miguel Martin Butts, imparted dry ginger and spice, while the 1st Fill European Gonzalez Byass Butts brought clean oak and green apple fruitiness to the blend. The use of 2nd Fill European Sherry Hogsheads and Butts added softer tannins, dried fruits, and a subtler spice profile, rounding out the complex character of this whisky.
