Description
A distillery bottling of Lindores Abbey, a 4 year old Lowland malt from 2018, drawn from cask 18/0581 and bottled at 59.1%. 680 bottles in all. Founded in 2017 by Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith, Lindores Abbey distils where a monk made aqua vitae for the king in 1494. The first single malt, MCDXCIV, the Roman numerals for 1494, was released in 2021.
The spirit was made in copper pot stills from barley grown on the abbey grounds, for a rich, fruity young spirit. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness, fast on the young spirit. The house style is built on active, carefully chosen casks and patience rather than age alone. Lindores also makes Aqua Vitae, a botanical spirit after the medieval water of life. The whisky is bottled on site at Newburgh to keep transport low. A young distillery, it leans on active casks to bring its whisky to life quickly. The house style is layered and fruity, richer than a typical light Lowland.
At its natural 59.1% it is concentrated. The Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. The mouthfeel is full, the fruit carried on a young body. The finish runs rich, spiced and full. This is a characterful young Lowland single malt.
