Alessio Guidi makes this Tuscan orange wine from Garnacha Blanca, fermented on the skins and aged six months in amphorae under a biodynamic, natural regime. It shows dried apricot, orange peel and beeswax with a firm, savoury grip.
Description
Alessio Guidi runs The Juice Asylum in Tuscany as a low-intervention project, farming biodynamically and letting the fruit ferment without correction. This wine is made from Garnacha Blanca, a white grape that carries good weight and a measured acidity. As an orange wine it is fermented in contact with its skins, which draws tannin, colour and phenolic structure from the skins and gives the amber hue and grip. It then ages six months in clay amphorae, where slow oxygen ingress through the porous walls softens the tannin and develops nutty, dried-fruit complexity without any oak character. Natural and biodynamic, with native yeasts and minimal sulphur, the wine reads as savoury and textural. The colour is deep amber. The nose shows dried apricot, orange peel and beeswax over dried herbs, with a ripe pear note underneath. The palate is dry and firm, the skin tannin providing grip and the finish savoury and long, closing on almond and citrus peel. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a wide glass. It suits roast pork, herb-roasted chicken and mushroom dishes.
