Alessio Guidi makes this natural Tuscan red under his The Juice Asylum label from Sangiovese with Mammolo and Alicante. Farmed biodynamically and aged six months in barrel, it is fresh and light at 13 percent, showing bright red berry, cherry and a floral, herbal lift.
Description
The Juice Asylum is the project of Alessio Guidi, an unconventional Tuscan winemaker who started in 2016 with the aim of expressing his terroir as freely and naturally as possible, with minimal intervention in vineyard and cellar. The wine is certified biodynamic, natural, organic and vegan, blending Sangiovese with Mammolo, Alicante and other local red grapes. Tuscany's clay and sandstone soils and warm days tempered by cool nights give these varieties bright fruit and high acidity, and the low intervention approach, with native yeasts and little or no added sulphur, keeps the wine fresh and transparent. Ageing is a short six months in barrel, enough to round the texture without covering the fruit. The wine is bright ruby, with aromas of red berries, cherry and violet over dried herbs and pepper. The palate is light bodied and lively at 13 percent, with low to moderate tannin, crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish that reflects the natural winemaking. Serve slightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It is an easy table red for lighter meats and vegetable dishes.
